Plant Once, Harvest Thrice: The Power of MPIB’s Vision

May 3, 2025

Plant Once, Harvest Thrice: The Power of MPIB’s Vision

In an exclusive interview, with Mr Wan Mohd Adiasrol bin Wan Hussain, Director of Marketing and Development of the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (MPIB) shared insights into its powerful vision that’s reshaping the agricultural landscape: “Plant Once, Harvest Thrice.”

More than just a tagline, this approach represents a deeper commitment to sustainable farming, efficient land use, and long-term profitability for local growers.

Since its establishment, MPIB has focused on empowering pineapple farmers across Malaysia with techniques and resources that maximize yields while maintaining the integrity of the environment. The “Plant Once, Harvest Thrice” philosophy is built on the ability of certain pineapple varieties to produce three harvests from a single planting cycle, a method that dramatically reduces labour, resources, and operational costs over time.

A Model of Smart Agriculture

During the interview, Mr.Adiasrol highlighted the significance of MPIB’s initiatives aimed at empowering farmers, particularly in supporting both export and import activities.

One notable innovation is the introduction of enhanced cultivation methods, such as Night Farming, which has successfully drawn the interest of young adults into the agricultural sector. This approach not only offers a more flexible working environment but also creates opportunities for part-time involvement during nighttime hours, making farming more accessible and appealing to the younger generation.

Additionally, MPIB continues to actively promote local agropreneurs and their wide range of pineapple-based products, including juices, snacks, and other food innovations. A key reason for our enthusiastic participation in FDM2025 is the opportunity to showcase these homegrown products on a global stage, bringing greater visibility to Malaysia’s vibrant agropreneur community.

Empowering Local Communities

MPIB’s vision also extends beyond crop output. At the heart of the initiative is a desire to uplift rural communities, offering training, financial support, and market access to thousands of pineapple growers. By enabling farmers to achieve more from a single investment, MPIB is actively promoting economic resilience and self-sufficiency within the agricultural sector.

“We don’t just grow pineapples, we grow opportunities,” Mr. Adiasrol shared. “Our goal is to equip farmers with the tools to succeed, now and for generations to come.”

The Pineapple SG-1: A Game-Changer in the Industry

The Pineapple SG-1 marks a significant breakthrough in the pineapple industry. While traditional varieties typically require a year to produce a single fruit, SG-1 offers a shorter planting cycle, making it more efficient for growers. Not only is it exceptionally sweet and stable, but it also boasts a distinctive flavour profile that appeals to a broad range of consumers. Its unique taste and quality have sparked increasing interest in international markets, with strong demand from Singapore, the UAE, Japan, South Korea, and across Europe.

In line with its rising popularity, we are actively running a campaign to promote pineapple as Malaysia’s National Fruit. Malaysia’s pineapples are now gaining recognition globally for their sweetness, texture, and consistent quality- thanks in large part to MPIB’s ongoing efforts in innovation.

As part of their ongoing efforts to spotlight Malaysia’s thriving pineapple industry, MPIB will be showcasing a diverse range of pineapple-based products developed by local agropreneurs at FDM2025.

Visitors are encouraged to explore the innovation and quality behind these homegrown offerings by visiting Booths 2E121 – 2E128, from 1 - 3 July 2025 at MITEC, Kuala Lumpur. This platform presents a valuable opportunity to engage with proudly Malaysian products and support the agropreneur community on an international stage.
